Be a part of something special
Lobster Ponds Haven is a not-for-profit organisation powered by people who care about this place, the wildlife that calls it home, and helping protect it for the future.
And right now, we’d love a few more people to become part of it.
Whether you want to gain hands-on experience, put skills you already have to good use, give something back to your local community, or simply spend your time doing something that matters, there are a few different ways to get involved.
You don’t need to tick every box before putting your hand up. If one of the opportunities below sounds like it could be your kind of thing, tell us you’re interested and we can take it from there.
Volunteering at Lobster Ponds gives you chance to learn, contribute, or both
Volunteering at Lobster Ponds Haven can be a chance to:
gain practical experience in conservation,
animal care or community organisations
put existing skills, knowledge and
experience to meaningful use
make a visible contribution to a small
organisation where your help really matters
learn more about Tasmanian wildlife
and the work that goes into protecting it
meet people who care about the
same things you do
find a structured, purposeful way to
give back locally

Studying conservation, environmental science, ecology or something similar?
Volunteering at the Haven could be a great way to build practical experience alongside your studies.
Got a little more time on your hands these days?
If you’re retired, semi-retired or simply looking for a worthwhile way to stay involved in your community, volunteering can be a chance to put your experience to good use and contribute to your community.
Where could you make your impact?
Aquarium & wildlife care
Help care for the fish, birds, and lobsters at the Haven, while keeping their tanks and animal areas clean, healthy and looking their best.
The work includes feeding animals, topping up water, checking that everyone looks healthy, cleaning tank glass and letting the team know if something seems amiss.
The current routine requires around 1.5 hours per visit, three days per week.
This could suit you if you’re reliable, comfortable around animals and enjoy practical, hands-on work.
You’ll get regular, hands-on time with the animals, and if travel costs are a consideration, fuel expenses can be reimbursed as part of the Haven’s not-for-profit arrangements.
If you’re studying or hoping to work in conservation, ecology or animal care, it could also be a chance to gain experience outside the classroom.
Friends of the Freshwater Lobster Committee
Our committee members help keep Lobster Ponds Haven organised, supported and moving forward — from taking care of the practical details to helping shape decisions about what comes next.
Whether you’re looking to build experience in governance and community organisations, or bring years of leadership, admin or professional know-how to something worthwhile, there’s room to make a meaningful contribution.
Committee Member - Secretary
Like bringing order to moving parts?
Our Secretary helps keep Lobster Ponds Haven organised behind the scenes.
This is a role for someone who gets satisfaction from creating clarity. You’ll help turn discussions into decisions, decisions into actions, and keep the committee’s important information organised along the way.
That includes supporting meetings and minutes, correspondence, membership and Association records, and helping the Committee keep track of decisions and actions.
This could suit you if you’re organised, communicate clearly, notice the details and like helping a group keep things moving.
Committee Member - Chairperson
Our Chairperson helps the Committee work well together and keeps Lobster Ponds Haven focused on what it’s here to do.
That includes chairing meetings, facilitating discussions and decisions, supporting other Committee members, helping shape priorities and representing the Association when appropriate.
This could suit you if you’re a good listener, comfortable bringing different perspectives together and interested in helping a community organisation move forward.
For someone looking to develop leadership or governance experience — or someone who already has plenty and would like to put it towards something worthwhile — this could be a particularly meaningful way to contribute.
You don’t need to work out the perfect role before you get in touch.
Maybe you know you’d like to help with the animals.
Maybe you have years of professional experience you’d love to put towards something local.
Maybe you’re studying in a related field and want some real-world experience.
Or maybe you just know you have some time, energy or skills to offer and want to find out where they might be useful.
Tell us you’re interested and we can have a conversation about where you might fit.
Not sure which role is for you?

The form below is simply an expression of interest, not a commitment or formal job application.
It should only take a couple of minutes. Tell us who you are, what kind of volunteering interests you and a little about what caught your attention.
Someone from Lobster Ponds Haven will then get in touch to chat, answer your questions and talk about what the next step could look like.
